Learn how HS codes, de minimis and VAT work across countries.
Every traded product maps to a Harmonized System (HS) code — a 6-digit international number that most countries extend to 8 or 10 digits. Your duty rate, de minimis treatment and VAT all follow from that code and the country of origin. Our lookup shows the verified rate for the exact subheading.
De minimis is the value below which customs duty is waived. Thresholds differ by country and have been changing fast: the US $800 exemption was suspended in 2025, and the EU removed its €150 e-commerce exemption on 1 July 2026. Check the current threshold for your route before you price.
Most countries charge VAT or GST on import, collected by customs at the border. Rates range from 5% (Canada GST) to 27% (Hungary VAT), and they apply on top of any duty. The US has no federal VAT but adds Merchandise Processing and Harbor Maintenance fees.
